Artist Statement
After a decade as an international journalist, I was hit with a burning desire to leave the tyranny of facts for the possibility of mysticism and beauty. To leave the linear in search of the abstract. To let the soul speak instead of the intellect. I wanted to address the chaos I was seeing in the newsroom through new eyes. My hands require more than just a keyboard.
For the Dissolve Series, I use solvent to dissolve reality and explore the beauty in disintegration. There is much going on behind, above, and below the surface, and as a mystic I tap into this as I create abstract landscape and portraiture. I use plaster, paint, paste, inks, glass, found objects, and acrylics to give texture and form to metaphor.
My goal is for viewers to be moved in a pre-verbal way by the layer upon layer of their own souls. I enjoy that my art is like a Rorschach test, and that viewers see it through their own lens, and bring their own psychological interpretation to the work.
As a mystic, I’m using my ability to channel to create a tarot deck called Mystic Circus, a new deck addressing the very real issues in a new world order.
I work out of yurt art and writing studio in the woods on the U.S. West Coast, the area itself a work of natural beauty that feeds and informs my process.
